Sights!
Our hiatus in Bangkok was filled with lots of sights and adventures, we jumped on an impromptu tuk tuk with the help of a local, rode the boat ferries, explored China town and even played with capybaras! Some of the temples we saw were Wat Pho, Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Sri Sanphet and Wat Chaiwatthanaram. Wat Pho is famous for the reclining Budha and is in the heart of the city. The other temples were spots along our day trip to the Old Historic City of Ayutthaya. This city, once the capital of Siam, is known for historic palaces, Buddhist temples, monasteries and old relics from the past. We learned a lot about the history of Thailand during this stop in Bangkok.
Food!
We ate a lot of good food while in Bangkok. From street food to ramen and hotpot to KFC. If you want it, Bangkok has it. The street markets offered great local options, while the huge shopping malls allowed us to get some American comfort food.
Shopping!
We walked around the huge and beautiful ICONSIAM mall. The food court is modeled after markets and there is even a section that is based on a floating market. We took a day trip out to see 2 of Bangkok’s most famous markets, the Maeklong Railway Market and the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. The Railway Market is built quite literally along an active train route, and it is routine for shop owners to simply fold up their stall awnings to allow the train to pass and then continue on as normal.
The Floating markets today represent the trading of the past as the vendors sell their wares from small canal boats. These canals were built for trading expansion during the 19th century.
Finally, on our last day in Bangkok we wandered around the massive Chatuchak Weekend Market. This market is huge, with over 15,0000 stalls! We easily got lost, and ended up at the same pottery booth multiple times. But the food and experience was unforgettable.
